8月19日，2008年北京奥运会女子沙滩排球半决赛全部结束。头号种子、中国组合田佳/王洁经过三局激战以2-1力挫队友张希/薛晨闯入决赛，三局比分为22-24、29-27和15-8。田佳/王洁将在决赛中挑战卫冕冠军、美国著名组合沃尔什/梅•特雷纳。

    Chinese women's beach volleyball pair Tian Jia and Wang Jie will meet defending Olympic champions Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor of the United States in the final to be held on Thursday.　It is the first time for Chinese beach volleyball players to play at the Olympics finals.

    中国女子沙滩排球组合田佳和王洁本周四将迎战卫冕的奥运冠军组合、美国的沃尔什和梅•特雷纳。这是中国沙滩排球选手首次打入奥运会决赛。

    “卫冕”即“捍卫自己的荣誉和王者地位”，用英语来表达就是defending champion。而“成功卫冕”就是defend / retain the champion。Title也有“头衔, 冠军”的意思，因此我们说某人“卫冕冠军”也可以说defend the title。

    另外，champion除了表示“冠军、优胜者”，还可做动词表示“积极拥护、支持、捍卫”，例如：to champion the cause of civil rights（为民权事业而斗争）； 在口语中，champion还可以表示“非常的”，如：a champion blunder（大错特错）；a champion idiot（大傻瓜）等。
