Why is the Native Language Learnt So Well
How does it happen that children learn their mother tongue so well? When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language. we often find this interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in
most cases, may end up with a faulty and inexact command. What accounts for this difference?
Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself. partly in the behaviour of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favourable of all, namely, the first years of life. A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the right pronunciation, right intonation, right use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions which come to him in a fresh, ever-bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation.
Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the yea round, while an adult language-student has each week a limited number of hours which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, such as is often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching heat in January. And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled.
Finally, though a child’s ‘teachers” may not have been trained in language teaching, their relations with him are always close and personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.
16 Compared with adults learning a foreign language, children learn their native language with ease.
A Right             B Wrong             C Not mentioned
17 Adults’ knowledge and mental powers hinder their complete mastery of a foreign language.
A Right             B Wrong              C Not mentioned
18 The reason why children learn their mother tongue so well lies solely in their environment of learning.
A Right             B Wrong              C Not mentioned
19 Full exposure to the language spoken during the first years of life partly ensures the child’s success of learning his mother tongue.
A Right             B Wrong              C Not mentioned
20 A child learning his native language has the advantage of having private lessons all the year round.
A Right             B Wrong              C Not mentioned
21 Gestures and facial expressions may assist a child in mastering his native language.
A Right             B Wrong              C Not mentioned
22 So far as language teaching is concerned, the teacher’s close personal relationship with the student is more important than the professional language teaching training he has received.

British Newspapers
1. Britain has a large circulation (发行量 ) of national newspapers. The Daily Mirror and The Daily Express both sell about 4 million copies each day. On average, every family will buy one newspaper in the morning and two or three on Sundays.
2. Local newspapers are just as popular as the national ones in Britain. Local papers have a weekly circulation of 13 million. Nearly every town and country area has its own paper, and almost every local paper is financially holding its own. Many local newspapers are earning good profits.
3. Local newspapers have special characteristics. They mainly satisfy interest in local events — births, weddings, deaths, council meetings. and sports. Editors often rely on a small staff of people who know the district well. Clubs and churches in the neighborhood regularly supply these papers with much local news. Local news does not get out of date as quickly as national news. If there is no room for it in this w eeks edition, a news item can be held over until the following week.
4. The editor of a local newspaper never forgets that the success of any newspaper depends on advertising. For this reason, he is keen to keep the good will of local businessmen. If the newspaper attracts local readers and the businessmen will be grateful to the paper for the opportunity to keep their products in the public eye.
5. Local newspapers seldom comment on problems of national importance, and editors rarely take sides on political questions. But they can often provide service to the community in expressing public feeling on local issues. A newspaper can sometimes persuade the council to take action to improve transport, provide better shopping facilities, and preserve local monuments and places of interest.

第一篇                         Benefits of Educating Girls
The benefits of educating girls are enormous—to individual girls both when they are young and when they became adult women, to their future families, and to society as a whole. Education enables women to contribute more fully to the social and economic development of their societies. A girl’s education is also an investment in future generations, the more educated a mother is, the more likely are her children—particularly her daughters—to enroll in and stay in school.
The higher level of education attained by women is strongly associated with lower child death rate. Experts believe that more educated mothers practise better hygiene and nutrition(营养), use health services more frequently, and manage family resources better, resulting in improved child health and survival. Women with more schooling tend to be healthier themselves, perhaps reflecting their improved ability to avoid frequent childbearing (分娩)and to take advantage of available health services during pregnancy (怀孕).    The educational level achieved by women, like family planning services, has the most powerful influence on family size. The impact of education on family size is strongest and most consistent for women who have completed some secondary Schooling. Educating girls is three times more likely to lower family size than educating boys. Education appears to affect family size in many ways. More educated women not only want fewer children than their less educated husbands, but also are more likely to use effective contraception (避孕) successfully and to limit their families to the number of children they want. Women with more schooling tend to marry and have children late, which contributes to smaller family size.
Family size is ideal and child death rates are lowest, therefore, in countries that combine strong family planning and health programs with high levels of education for women.
31 According to the article, families and the whole society benefit from women’s
A work.                B education.
C effort                   D health.

33 Lower death rate of children owes to all of the following except women’s
A good health.
B frequent visits to health services.
C better utilization of nutrition.
D management of family resources.
34 In what way do educated women contribute to the small family size according to the text?
A By educating their children
B By marrying late.
C By supporting the small family.
D By educating their husbands.
35 It can be concluded from the passage that educating girls
A has great influence on boys’ growth.
B is helpful to the stability of families.
C can raise women’s social status.
D contribute to the development of society.

第二篇                            Why Export?
There are often sound economic reasons why a company should not export. The exporter has to meet additional costs in transport, tariffs, packaging, insurance. and so on. Unless a correspondingly higher price can be obtained in overseas market these additional costs must come out of profit. The force of argument is widely recognized though rarely discussed in public. Official reaction to the problem in the past has been to introduce higher taxes which are expected to limit home demand and force producers to sell overseas. This is surely a negative approach.
The policy should not be to move from a profitable to a less profitable market, but to expand capacity. In other words, potential capacity should exceed home demand.
There must be very few factories that could not produce 5-10% more without buying another machine or employing another worker. To take up export business can create extra demand that makes necessary reorganization, improvement or expansion of capacity. Indeed, the challenge of meeting this extra demand often leads to higher all-round efficiency, and reduced costs for the home market as well as overseas markets.
The demand from any overseas market may change with the state of the economy, and many manufacturers will argue that expanding capacity by an additional ten percent merely for export is risky. However, recent economic history shows that the home economy is just as variable as that of overseas countries—if not more so. The problem, as always, is one of top management attitude. Successful exporting must be planned as an ever-lasting feature of business thinking. Once in an export market the company must stay in and see it through, since the task of reentering becomes more difficult and expensive.
36 The argument against exporting Is that
A additional costs will cut profits.
B overseas markets are variable.
C obtaining overseas markets is rarely possible.
D the home market is the only profitable one.
37 Higher taxes were once introduced to
A increase revenues and cut budget deficits.
B limit the domestic market and make home manufacturers enter the world market.
C limit excessive expansion of manufacturers.
D increase the home demand and force the government to provide necessary protections.
38 The factories should be able to produce more
A with the financial assistance from the government.
B without dependence on others.
C without any additional investment.
D with higher demand from overseas markets.
39 Why is it risky to expand capacity merely for export, according to many manufacturers?
A The demand from foreign markets varies from one economy to another.
B Overseas markets are too complicated to know well.
C Foreign consumers do not like Imported goods.
D There are far too many trade barriers in overseas markets.
40 Recent economic history Indicates that
A the home economy is more variable than that of foreign countries.
B the economy at home is just as changeable as that of other countries.
C the domestic economy is not as variable as that of overseas countries
D the home economy is different from that of foreign countries.

第三篇                             Talking Without Sound
Each Indian tribe had a different language. Many Indians never learned any language except their own. Do you know how Indians from different tribes talked to each other? They had two ways to talk without sound. One way was by sign language; another way by signals.
Sign language is a way of talking by using signs. Indians used sign language when they met strangers. In this way, they could find out whether the stranger was a friend or an enemy. In Indian sign language, signs were made with the hands. One sign meant “man”. Another meant “horse”. To tell the time of day when something happened, an Indian pointed to the sky. He showed where the sun had been at the time.
Indians usually used signals when they wanted to send messages to someone far away. To make signals, an Indian might use a pony. He might use a blanket. Or he might use smoke, a mirror or fire arrows. To signal that he had seen many animals, an Indian rode his pony in a large circle. Sometimes the Indian gave a signal like this and then went away to hide. This meant that there was danger.
The blanket signal was visible from far away. An Indian held the corners of a blanket in his hands. Then he began to swing the blanket from side to side in front of him. An Indian could send many different signals with his blanket. He could also send many signals with a mirror.
He usually used the mirror to warn someone of danger. Or he attempted to get the attention of a person far away. But he also used it to send messages in code. Of course, mirrors could be used only when the sun was shining. At night, Indians used fire arrows for signaling.
An Indian also sent signals with smoke. He made a small fire of dry wood. Then he put grass or green branches on it. He held a blanket over the fire for a minute. When he removed the blanket from the fire, there was a Loud of smoke. The number of clouds of smoke told his message in code.
Now you can see that Indians didn’t need to learn each other’s language. They could talk to one another by using signals or sign language.
41 The story tells about
A people living in India.
B the Indians who had many kinds of languages.
C the Indians who didn’t use their languages.
D how Indians communicated between different tribes.
42 Sign language is
A a language only for Indians.
B a way to express one’s ideas by making gestures.
C a way of talking by signing on paper.
D a secret way of talking to strangers.
43 Which of the following is true?
A When an Indian wanted to say “name” he pointed to himself.
B When an Indian wanted to say “horse”, he rode his horse.
C When an Indian wanted to say “sun”, he pointed to the sky.
D Indians used sign language to find out whether a stranger was a friend or an enemy.
44 An Indian used a mirror to
A warn someone of danger.
B get the attention of someone far away.
C send messages in code.
D all of the above.
45 Indians didn’t need to learn each other’s language because
A they never met each other.
B they could use signals or sign language.
C they could write messages.
D they thought they could easily make themselves understood without learning a new language.
