ability  capacity  capability  genius  talent  competence  faculty  gift  aptitude  这些名词均可表示人的“能力，才能”之意。
 
ability  做体力，脑力或机械工作的能力或力量。普通用词，指人先天的或学来的各种能力。
如：He has the ability to do the work. 他有做这项工作的能力。 a machine with the ability to cope with large loads 能处理大负荷量的机器。
 
capacity  生产、 体会、 理解或学习的能力。侧重指人的潜在能力，通常不指体力，多指才智，尤指接受与领悟能力。
如：This book is within the capacity of (ie can be understood by) younger readers. 这本书年轻的读者也能看懂。
 
capability  能做某事的素质、能力；尚未发挥的天资或素质。多用于人，指胜任某项具体工作的能力，也指本身具有、尚未发挥的潜在能力。常与of或for连用。
如：You have the capability to do/of doing this job well. 你有能力把这件工作做好。He has great capabilities as a writer. 他极具作家潜质。
 
genius  （做）某事物的天生的非凡才能。语气最强，指天赋的高度才能与智力。
如：He has a genius for getting along with children. 他擅长与孩子们打成一片。
 
talent  特殊的能力、才能、才干，天才。着重指人某方面具有可发展和培养的突出天赋才能，但语意比genius弱。
如：possess a remarkable talent for music 具有非凡的音乐天才。 a painter of great talent 天才的画家。
 
competence  胜任，能力，称职。正式用词，侧重指令人满意的业务能力与水平，达到胜任某项工作等的要求。
如：No one doubts her competence as a teacher. 谁也不怀疑她能胜任教师工作。competence in solving problems 解决问题的能力。
 
faculty  做某事物的特殊才能。指特殊的才能或智力。
如：have a great faculty for learning languages 有学习语言的才能。He has a great faculty for mathematics. 他具有很强的学数学的才能。
 
gift  天赋，禀赋，才能。着重个人的天赋的才能或在某方面的显著本领，常暗含不能用一般规律作解释的意味。
如：I've always been able to learn languages easily; it's a gift. 我学习语言一向是轻而易举, 这是天分。  He has many outstanding gifts. 他多才多艺。
 
aptitude  天生的才能或技巧，天资，天赋。多?
如：Does she show any aptitude for games? 能看得出她有体育方面的天赋吗?   He has an unfortunate aptitude for saying the wrong thing. 他有失言的倒霉本事。
