UKVI and Regular IELTS: What's the Difference?

UKVI stands for UK Visas and Immigration. It is a version of the IELTS test that is specifically designed to meet the operational requirements of the UK Visas and Immigration. There are 12 designated test centers in mainland China for the UKVI IELTS test. The test is available in both Academic (A) and General Training (G) versions, and the content, format, difficulty level, examiners, and scoring criteria are the same as the regular IELTS test. However, the test report form will indicate that you have taken the IELTS test for UK Visas and Immigration.

Key Differences between UKVI and Regular IELTS:

1. For courses below degree level (e.g., foundation programs, language courses), regardless of the university or institution in the UK, you must take the UKVI IELTS test. This requirement also applies to all immigration visa applications.

2. For degree and postgraduate courses in the UK (e.g., undergraduate, master's programs), it depends on the university. If you are applying to a non-highly trusted university, you must take the UKVI IELTS test. If you are applying to a highly trusted university, the university will decide whether you need to take the UKVI IELTS test or not.

3. The UKVI IELTS test is specifically designed for UK visa and immigration purposes and is not required for other countries such as Australia or Canada.

Our IELTS advice:

1. If you are confident that your IELTS score meets the direct entry requirements, then it's okay. If not, you can only retake the regular IELTS test, and the UKVI test can only be used for language courses. We recommend taking the UKVI test first and then retaking the regular test to improve your score.

2. It's better to be safe and take the UKVI test, but keep in mind that the UKVI test tends to have lower scores and is now computer-based.

Other Important Information about IELTS:

1. If the IELTS test partner believes it is necessary to recheck the test results or any related examination process, the test report form may not be issued within 7 days of the test date. Candidates may be asked to provide voice samples to assist in the investigation. In special circumstances, candidates may be required to retake the IELTS Life Skills test.

2. If any irregularities are discovered after the test report form has been issued, the test results may be canceled.

3. The test results will be provided to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for the purpose of verifying the test results or investigating suspected cheating.

4. If the test report form submitted to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) by the candidate or their representative is suspected of any form of tampering, the candidate's original score may be canceled.

5. Candidates do not have the right to access the complete test answer sheets and speaking test recordings made during the IELTS Life Skills test.

Important Notes for UKVI IELTS Test:

1. In mainland China, candidates need to register for the UKVI IELTS Life Skills test through the NEEA IELTS registration website.

2. Candidates who have passed a certain level of the IELTS Life Skills test will not be allowed to take the same level of test again within two years. Candidates who violate this rule and register for the test again will not receive an IELTS Life Skills test report form and will not be allowed to transfer, withdraw, or refund their registration.

3. Candidates who have not passed the IELTS Life Skills test can register again at any time, but they can only register for two tests at the same time, and the test dates must be at least 7 days apart. Please refer to the registration website for the deadlines for registration, transfer, and withdrawal of the IELTS test.

4. Candidates are solely responsible for choosing which IELTS test to register for (including IELTS Academic, IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration, IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration Academic (computer-delivered), IELTS Life Skills A1, IELTS Life Skills B1). NEEA and the British Council are not responsible for any incorrect choices made by candidates.
