　　three hypotheses about the true identity of the author of the Pearl Poet's poems, four finest poems in English Middle Ages in the fourteenth century handwritten book in the British library.

　　1) First, the author might be John Massey. Because he lived in the northwest England where the manuscript produced and the handwriting of the manuscript in both John and the Pearl Poet's poems is the same.

　　2) Second, another theory suggests that the poems are written by a writer called Hugh because he wrote a poem about Garwain and one of the four poems is about Garwain too. And Hugh used same alliterations as the Pearl Poet.

　　3) Third, the poems might be finished by several different authors instead of one. Because these poems all mentions a same place in one region.

　　1) First, the professor thinks that the same handwriting does nott mean that it came from the same author. He points out that in 14th century, reproducing books was popular. Lots of books are being copied by professional copiers and it was really hard to tell if the works were from the same copier. The similarities only indicates that the poems were copied by the same person.

　　2) Second, the professor states that different regions would use different dialects back then. The dialect being used in Hugh's works was Yorkshire dialect which was different from the ones used in the Pearl Poet's poems.

　　3) Third, the professor does not think that poems are finished by several authors instead of one. Because the same place mentioned in the poems is not the only similarity. There were other factors, like the shared vocabulary. The authors in the Pearl poet's poems used a large number of uncommon and unique words, but those words did not appear in other literature works.
